MEDIC22: New Blood 011
Following the success of last year’s ‘New Blood 010′ compilation, Med School Music gets the scalpel out again to bring you another selection of super sharp cuts from fresh, forward-thinking or previously unreleased artists for 2011. The last ‘New Blood’ album set a precedent for the series by storming the iTunes ‘Top 10 Dance Albums’ and the latest instalment looks likely to repeat this success, bringing another batch of future stars to the fore.
Having already grabbed the attention of everyone from Andy C to dBridge, the ever-versatile Anile opens the vinyl album with warm atmospheric set piece ‘Change Of Direction’ before Flame continues the journey. With a sound that veers between the neurofunk and techno influences of his past and the deep and minimal sounds of his present, there’s a flurry of smoky vocal whispers and delicately tripping beats in ‘Watcher’. Next up is 20 year old Music Technology student turned dubstep/d&b producer Lung with his stand out track ‘Relapse’ which shows all the hallmarks of an ‘Afterlife’ style future classic.
Moving on, we get a couple of ice cold productions. Live and direct from Germany, Hamburg-based Head Of Sound Design and lecturer in Experimental Music Rawtekk comes with a glowing recommendation from Phace. This is a lesson about ‘Snowflakes’ we won’t forget, sonorous vocals shimmer enticingly alongside pattering tech-driven drums and glistening atmospherics. St Petersburg producer Spherique provides another snowflakes themed venture, with a soothing blend of oceanic SFX with murmuring vocal snatches in ‘Snowflakes Catcher’.
Be prepared to wipe a tear from your eye as we near the end; Nuage gets mournful and melancholy in this heartfelt ode to absence; ‘Missing You’ pairs warm, pulsating bass with soft synths and a lilting rhythm, leading nicely into Bulb ‘Distinctions Of The Same’. Influenced by Instra:mental, Flying Lotus and ASC, Bulb brings in a twist of the surreal with his debut on Med School as Tiiu‘s Emika-esque vocal shines through swathes of clicking beats and hazy SFX here. Eleven8 wraps up ‘New Blood 011′ employing expansive, guitar-laden soundscapes and distant vocal snatches in ‘Colours Of Distance’.
